Depression and character

Depression is a very complex phenomenon. Scientists still disagree on its nature, origin, manifestations, etc. There are also different views on the question what types of condition should be included into depression and what should be rated as mere blues or fatigue.

There are different reasons which cause depression. They are emotional shock, bereavement, overload, unhappy love, etc. Our psyche is vulnerable and sometimes it is very difficult for our state of mind to bear hard emotional strain. Different life situations are sometimes be so severe and so hard to go through, that any person who gets into them can easily plunge into depression. Here everything is clear and one should feel sympathy for such people. You will hardly condemn a person for his/her depression, if it is a consequence of some trouble.

Another matter is people, who are predisposed to depression. It is difficult to identify whether it is innate or is formed during certain stages of personal development and formation of the personality, but the fact is whatever difficult or easy their life is they are doomed to experience depression.

What are these people like? These are people, who have overrated and thus unrealizable ambitions; who are strongly dependent on other people's opinion, because they don't their own. One improperly uttered word can deprive them of good mood for the whole day and prevent them from full-fledged and healthy sleep. These people take each uttered word about them to heart. This refers to both their work and personal life. The main reason of such tight dependence of these people on others' opinion and points of view can be explained by lack of self-sufficiency in them. They are not self-confident and need constant confirmation of their brilliance, greatness and successfulness. Strange that it may be, but in fact these people live their lives not for themselves, but for the constant proof to other people that they are the best. It is not enough for them to be content with what they think of themselves. By the way they are unable to assess themselves without outside assistance. And, of course, as you can guess, these assessments are far from being high all the time. The slightest remark about their look or actions can put them out of step. Constant discrepancy between their self-conceit and restraint attitude of people to them makes them withdrawn and gradually leads them to depression.

It is hard to determine whether this type of depression is curable. It is caused by lack of self-sufficiency and it is a trait. So, to treat this state, you should at first remove the feature of character. It is very difficult if at all possible. To change features of character a person should change the whole philosophy of life. A mere handful of people are able to perform such a feat.

If such a person really wants to improve his/her situation, he/she should begin with the main thing: to love life and themselves in this life.
