Post-vacation depression

It often happens that having spent our vacation we understand that we are absolutely incapable of working. Coming to work we see that all our tasks which we have already learned to fulfill automatically now seem to us insurmountable. Especially if it comes to creative approach, we become absolutely unable to work as if we have no experience at all. If it is so difficult to return to work after one's leave maybe it is better not to have rest at all? The paradox is that after doing nothing for a certain period of time we don't experience cheerfulness and readiness for work, but suffer from headache, irritation and apathy. This state is called post-vacation depression. It is caused by wrong spent vacation.

Right vacation is when people completely switch over from one type of activity to another. The main thing is to forget about your office at all. If you go on calling your colleagues and continue think about your work during your leave you fulfill double work, because you go on working and make an effort to relax simultaneously.

The second problem is lack of time. According to experts, it is better not rest at all, than to have an insufficient rest. Scientists have identified vacation should last at least two weeks. One week is needed for the adaptation to new environment with all its peculiarities. The second will be spent for the rest itself. It is even better to have one more week for the readaptation when you return home, to get adjusted to the previous conditions of life.

One more common mistake is when you keep somebody's company. In such cases the place and the way you spend your time is chosen not by you, but by your friends and acquaintances. Learn to say "no" to your friends without a false sense of guilt.

But even if you have had a good time, had a sufficient rest and feel yourself ready to plunge into your work like a giant refreshed, you tend to try to solve all accumulated tasks at once. Overall experience shows it is harmful to overload yourself on the first working day after your leave. You must wait for some days to restore your full productive and intellectual potential. Otherwise you can go through a nervous breakdown.

The first working day after your leave shouldn't be treated seriously. Though if you really love your work and treat it as a hobby, you may not wait to adapt to it but start at once and get pleasure.

Don't treat your post-vacation depression as a manifestation of your weakness: such problems are familiar to strong and successful people. Life is beautiful and wonderful.

How to cope with depression, if it has come to you? Understand that work, of course, is very important, but immediate plunge into your work is unnecessarily and harmful.

Start with the simplest tasks, which don't require much attention and great mental effort. Talk with your colleagues about pleasant things, recall the most pleasant moments of your vacation, etc.

Do physical exercises. Get up 20-30 minutes earlier than usual. This will give you more time for reconsideration of your values, adjusting to new surroundings and dreams of the next vacation.
