The weather and blues
Each person comes across the problem of sudden worsening of state: he/she begins to suffer from headache, joint pain, etc. it is often accompanied by bad mood and spleen. People usually can't understand the reason for the emergence of these painful symptoms. Then they watch the weather forecast and find out that today's weather pattern is unfavourable. It is the worst for people suffering from heart, cardiovascular and other diseases, but healthy people suffer from it as well, tough, of course, their state is much easier as to compare with ill people.
Why are we so dependant on weather? This problem always existed by now it seems to be more urgent. Together with the development of new technologies we become weaker and more prone to react negatively to changes of the environment and weather.
Apart from physical reasons for worsening of our mood there are also psychological ones.
Some types of weather are subconsciously associated in our mind with bad mood and depression. It refers to rainy and cloudy weather. This is a sort of stereotype which we acquire from childhood. Of course, worsening of mood on a rainy day can be explained by the lack of daylight, but it is rather an additional reason than the main one.
In fiction belonging to different centuries all bad events occur to the accompaniment of rains, storms, strong winds, etc. Melancholy, boredom, yearning and anguish is usually depicted in dark shades and is usually accompanied by the drumming of rain. All these world-view patterns come to our consciousness and subconsciousness and later on determine our mood during a dull weather. It works automatically as a program. When it rains, our consciousness retrieves negative associations from our memory and worsens our mood. Only very strong and independent-minded persons don't follow this model and can feel happy and be in high spirits despite the weather. In fact, our mood is spoilt not by the weather itself, but by its image in our consciousness and all negative associations connected with it.
How to cheer up on a rainy day? If a rainy weather provokes bad mood in you, close the curtains, switch on the light as if it is evening time, turn on music or TV, think about pleasant moments of your life. It is even better to recall these moments together with your friends, so call them and have a comfortable chat. Divert from your problems, don't think over your future in such weather, because it may seem to you as dark as the weather behind your window.
Just as it is true that each man is a maker of his fate, the same is true about the mood. It is up to you to decide either to give in to the weather behind your window or to live full-fledged life paying no attention to such trifles as rain.
